Noy says that Batato Barea’s “numeritos” in the porteño underworld -that word he rescued from the old theatrical slang to avoid saying “perfomance” because of its foreignness and neutrality- had to happen with the speed and colorful magic of a hummingbird. Time consumed each of his appearances on stage with the intensity and transience of his own life. Cultura colibrí is an evocation of the fantasies of the counterculture in post-dictatorship Argentina, through the chronicle and poetry of Fernando Noy (San Antonio Oeste, Río Negro, 1951).
The exhibition traces the artistic and cultural production of Argentina between the 1980s and 1990s through his gaze as a protagonist of the period and survivor of a generation devastated by the violence of the last military dictatorship and later by the HIV-AIDS crisis. His pilgrim and mutant biography links in a unique way the culture of hipism, the avant-garde of the sixties, his “sexual exile” in San Salvador de Bahia, Brazil, fleeing persecution and police raids that harassed sexual dissidents, the democratic recovery and the explosion of the identities of the Buenos Aires counterculture.
From that hinge experience, the exhibition evokes the space of the dressing room and the imaginary of the carnival as moments of suspension of the logics that regulate everyday life and that precipitate states in transit and mutation. It is a scenario that will bring together works and archives of the time, by Batato Barea, Omar Schirillo, Delia Cancela, Alejandra Fenochio, Luis Frangella, Guillermo Kuitca, Marta Minujín, Marta Peluffo, Pablo Suárez, Jorge Gumier Maier, Ana Gallardo, several of them belonging to the patrimony of the Museo Moderno. Thus, an upside-down world is presented in which one can invent make-up fantasies and shelter from pain by following the flight of the hummingbird.
