We are pleased to announce our participation in the inaugural edition of ARPA Buenos Aires, an art fair with an innovative format, held at Casa de Victoria Ocampo, one of Buenos Aires’ landmark modernist buildings.
Alfredo Londaibere (Buenos Aires, 1955–2017) was a key figure in the group of artists that gathered around the gallery of the Centro Cultural Rojas during the 1990s, a pivotal scene in the development of contemporary art in Buenos Aires. Londaibere embodied the irreverent and nonconformist spirit of this milieu and served as director and curator of el Rojas from 1997 to 2002.
Grounded in a vernacular sensibility, his practice embraced the handmade and the artisanal, drawing on traditions associated with Surrealism, esotericism, and vernacular forms of image-making. His works bring together seemingly disparate references—from European classical art and colonial Baroque painting to central and peripheral modernisms and elements of popular culture—transforming them into a highly personal visual language.
For ARPA Buenos Aires, we present a selection of works that reflects the breadth of Londaibere’s practice. Among them are his distinctive wooden boxes, constructed from planks, painted in oil, and edged with gleaming metal. The presentation includes the last two available works from the Flores Sonia series, inspired by the designs of Sonia Delaunay, alongside tempera works on book pages and collages in which the artist “draws” with scissors.
In 2025, the Amalita Collection (Museo Fortabat, Buenos Aires) presented an exhibition devoted to his works on paper. In 2019, the Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires organized an extensive retrospective of his work. In 2011, he was included in Recovering Beauty: The 1990s in Buenos Aires at the Blanton Museum of Art, Texas. His work is held in the collections of the Museo Reina Sofía, Madrid; MALBA; Museo Moderno; and the Jorge Pérez Collection / Espacio 23, Miami, Minneapolis Institute of Art, among others.
