INFO
Silvia Gurfein (b. Buenos Aires, 1958) explores painting as a language, associating its formal aspects with elements from science and literature. In this particular body of works she observes nebulae in the deep sky and looks at the observing eye as well, finding formal connections between the eye’s iris and the astronomical formations. The paintings’ surfaces are built by layer upon layer of veils of oil paint, obtaining as a result rich blue and indigo colors which have reds or greens in their foundations. her method for applying paint by brushing and veiling attains a porcelain-like finish. Gurfein is committed to painting and to cross-referencing it with other disciplines and practices. Ghost Particle is the title of this exhibition and also the name of energy particles which are emitted by the Sun, and which have minimal interaction with matter, which they pass through as a ghost would through a wall. What track or footprint does a ghost leave? Mostly one on the imaginary. For Gurfein these paintings, which she calls mute and abysmal, leave the same impression.
