An Anthology

INFO
Nora Fisch Gallery presents the first exhibition in Argentina of Alicia Mihai Gazcue, which includes works made between 1969 and 2016. Born in Uruguay and based in Bucharest, Romania since the early 1980s, Mihai Gazcue has been an elusive presence in the art world. Rescued in recent years by her colleagues Liliana Porter and Ana Tiscornia -who vehemently believe in her relevance- her work will be introduced in our country by these artists in a guided visit on the opening day, which will be repeated on Saturday 5/10.
Accompanying the exhibition is a text by art historian and curator Laura Malosetti Costa, in which she recounts personal memories about Alicia, from when they shared circumstances in Uruguay in the 1970s.
Her approach to artistic practice has a conceptual and socio-political profile, imbued with a personal poetics and subtle humor. Although Alicia Mihai Gazcue has remained faithful to the hard conceptualism of her beginnings, as a young participant of the avant-garde artistic current that emerged in the 1970s in different urban centers of Latin America, her concern for dealing with issues of identity stands out now, no longer from specific perspectives of groups or nationalities, but from the reaffirmation related to the development of her vision from the culturally hybrid coordinates of her life.
The exhibition includes a series of works on paper and mixed media, as well as an installation consisting of the projection of a 16 mm film, documentation of his first performance originally made in Uruguay in 1969 and remade in Lund, Sweden, in 1974. Pasar entre ellos, as it is called, is a pioneering work that preceded similar performances produced later in Europe by now famous artists. In this work by Alicia, the public had to walk through a narrow space between two people dressed in military uniforms to enter the room.
Alicia Mihai Gazcué has participated in the XII Shanghai Biennial organized by curator Cuathémoc Medina, has exhibited in Spain and the United States, and has been interviewed by Gabriela Rangel, among others. Her work can be found in the collections of the Pérez Art Museum of Miami and Artium (Basque Center-Museum of Contemporary Art) as well as in relevant private collections.
