Ghost Dance is a series produced jointly by the these artsits, who develop collaborative projects besides individual bodies of work, Szalkowicz working primarily in photography and Pérsico in a variety of media, always with a conceptual approach, often imbued with ideas from literature or philosophy.
Gastón Pérsico and Cecilia Szlakowicz are interested in the profusion of reproduced images we live surrounded by, as a sort of natural habitat for contemporary life. In these group of works they have developed photo-montages which are at a mid-point between abstraction and representation, juxtaposing black areas with photo images taken from their archive of glossy magazines from the seventies and eighties.
Ghost Dance takes its name from a Patty Smith song and from a Ken McCullen film which features Jacques Derrida and explores the relationship between past and memory, understanding ghosts as paradoxical presences that appear in the present yet re-present something from past, nevertheless different from the subject they are meant to represent, in short something new. The memory of something that has never been present. Ghost Dance was exhibited at Untitled Art fair, Miami at the gallery’s booth in December 2014.
