ABOUT THE WORK
Elba Bairon plays with the vocabulary of both, classic and modernist sculpture, yet through the laborious process used to create her pieces, the forms of her sculptures often appear as in state of dissolution. Her recent series refer to the legacy of classic European sculpture, in this sense they convey an atmosphere of timelessness, yet the figures appear as in a state of dissolution and melting of their human shapes (or as emerging as such). This formal aspect is the result of the proprietary technique Bairon employs to build these sculptures. They are constructed by layers of paper paste and stucco carefully sanded, which results in a very particular finish.
