INFORMACIÓN
Sofía Bohtlingk has secured a distinctive position within Argentine contemporary art through her material, process-driven, and poetic investigations of painting. In this exhibition, she approaches the act of painting outside conventional frameworks of composition or subjective expression, instead engaging with questions such as the relationship between the ideal precision of geometric concepts and the irregularity of nature—where perfect forms like the square or exact rectangle do not occur.
Concurrently with this exhibition, Bohtlingk’s work is also on view in Rosario and in the town of 9 de Julio, Province of Buenos Aires, forming a triangle of exact proportions.
The works presented here introduce chance in tension with individual will, alongside a childhood memory of observing lines of shadow cast across a ceiling—an early experience of geometric pictorial composition—and the proposition that a painting might, in some sense, “make itself.”
The exhibition also features a sound piece produced in collaboration with experimental musician Alan Courtis, as well as three-dimensional objects and a video that operates as a kind of footnote to the show.
Sofía Bohtlingk (Buenos Aires, 1976) took part in the artist training programs at Universidad Di Tella and, a decade ago, in the Kuitca Fellowship. Since then, her work has been exhibited at institutions and platforms including the Museum of Modern Art of Buenos Aires, Proa 21, the Braque Prize, the Andreani Prize, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Rosario, Casa de América (Madrid), and the Fortabat Painting Prize—where she received Third Prize—among others.
